Non-Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors

Non-Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NNRTIs) are a class of antiretroviral medicines primarily used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infections. They work by binding directly to the reverse transcriptase enzyme at a specific site, changing its structure and preventing the virus from converting its RNA into DNA. This action reduces viral replication and helps control HIV infection. NNRTIs are commonly used in combination with other antiretroviral medicines as part of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART). Common examples include efavirenz, nevirapine, rilpivirine, etravirine, and doravirine.
